Types of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma

There are two main kinds of lymphoma: Hodgkin’s disease, which normally affects young people with an average age of 30 years; and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL), which is usually a disease of older people. Your NHL can be classified in one of two ways depending on its characteristics: the slow-growing indolent form, and the fast-growing aggressive form.

There are two main categories of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma

Within the classifications of indolent and aggressive, there are several different types of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL). Your doctor will be able to conduct tests to find out what type of NHL you have. These results will give them useful information about how the disease will behave and the best treatment for it. The type of NHL is decided by:

  • The sort of abnormal cells in the lymphoma (mainly B cells or T cells)
  • The appearance of affected lymph nodes
  • The types of proteins, or markers, on the surface of the abnormal cells

Some of the common types of NHL are listed below:

Does the type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma make a difference?

Determining which type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) you have is extremely important. Each type of NHL behaves differently; so they are treated very differently. Therefore, what you can expect from your disease and your treatment depends entirely on your type of NHL.
One of the most significant differences is whether you have indolent or aggressive NHL. Because of this, Lymphoma Life has different information for people with the two different types of NHL. If you know what type of NHL you want to look up, follow the link below for more detailed information.

What are follicular and diffuse non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma?

Follicular – lymph node cells still follow their normal arrangement when seen down the microscope. Usually belong to the indolent NHL group and account for about 1 in 4 of all cases of lymphoma.

Diffuse – normal arrangement of lymph node cells is lost when seen down a microscope. Usually belong to the aggressive NHL group. More common in men than women and makes up about 2 in 5 of all cases of lymphoma.
